When Take That announced the return of The Circus Live for Summer 2026, audiences knew they could expect the spectacle that made the original 2009 production one of the UK's most celebrated stadium tours. What they didn't see was the months of engineering, collaboration and innovation required behind the scenes to recreate one of the show's most iconic visual centrepieces.

With over 700,000 fans filling 17 stadiums across the UK and Ireland for Take That’s spectacular return of The Circus Live in 2026, at the heart of the production sat the transforming circular truss above the main stage—a structure that opens the show as a circus tent before breathtaking visual effects and dramatic transformation revealing the performance space beneath. While the effect appears effortless to audiences, recreating it for 2026 required an entirely new engineering approach.

That challenge was entrusted to LITEC by Area Four Industries Italy, whose engineering and manufacturing teams were commissioned to design and build a completely bespoke version of the centre-stage truss circle, combining structural performance, touring practicality and precision mechanical movement.



Recreating an Icon

The creative ambition was clear from the outset. Take That's Head of Production Chris Vaughan wanted to revive one of the defining visual moments from the original 2009 Circus tour while enhancing its performance using today's engineering capabilities. The audience experience needed to remain instantly recognisable, with the circular structure transforming from a circus tent exactly as fans remembered, while incorporating significant technical improvements behind the scenes.  The modifications and enhancements introduced for 2026 represented a significant advancement in the engineering, while remaining entirely invisible to the audience.

A Bespoke Engineering Solution

Rather than reproducing the original structure, LITEC developed a completely new custom-engineered solution.  The finished truss circle consisted of 18 individual sections at 20° intervals, combining five steel sections with thirteen aluminium sections, manufactured in two bespoke models to balance strength, weight and transportability. Every model of section was purpose-designed specifically for the production. The hinges, manufactured by Stage Dynamics SRL, formed an integral part of the transformation system.

One of the most significant engineering advancements introduced by the project, compared with the solutions adopted during the previous 2009 tour, was the replacement of the hydraulic bumper system with a fully mechanical solution based on counterweights.
 
Another key element of the movement system was the use of a catenary connecting the two main towers on either side of the stage, onto which the redirecting systems for two pairs of chain hoists were attached. These were positioned at Stage Right (SR) and Stage Left (SL) in the backstage area. The two pairs of hoists were responsible for the first stage of the ring’s lifting sequence, guiding its movement up to approximately halfway through the opening. The second stage of the movement was handled by two additional pairs of chain motors, also positioned backstage, which completed the lifting sequence until the final configuration was reached.
 
The entire system was designed to ensure smooth, synchronised and highly precise movement throughout all stages of the transformation sequence, while maintaining accurate control of the geometry and dynamics of the scenic element. Taken together, these solutions represented a significant technological evolution compared with the system used in 2009, achieving the same scenic effect and preserving its original visual impact through a more advanced, safer and fully mechanical movement architecture.

Balancing Creativity with Structural Performance

The circle was far more than a scenic element.  It provided the structural backbone for the red circus tent canopy before the show began, supported lighting positions around its perimeter, carried a reflective cargo net that enhanced the visual impact of the lighting design, and acted as the frame for the large circular LED wall positioned at the rear of the stage. At the same time, the structure needed to integrate seamlessly with the Stage Co tower systems and performer stage while remaining as lightweight as possible for safe touring operation.  Meeting these competing demands required close collaboration between Take That’s production team, creative designers, structural engineers and manufacturing specialists.

Working alongside Wonder Works, who developed the creative vision for the show, LITEC's engineering department translated artistic intent into a manufacturable touring structure. Carlo Ughelini, LITEC Product Strategist, and Alessio Carraretto, Project Manager of LITEC's Technical Department, both managed the engineering and project from initial conception, throughout the development and manufacturing process, to completion and delivery of the show. External structural engineer Eva Reffo provided the structural calculations and reports, including analysis based on worst-case wind loading scenarios.

Manufacturing Beyond Standard Truss Design

Although LITEC is recognised internationally for its truss manufacturing expertise, this project demanded new manufacturing techniques beyond conventional production.

Specific welding procedures were developed to accommodate the unique connections supporting the lighting fins and structural elements, while ensuring the finished assembly maintained the strength, accuracy and reduced weight required for touring. The result was a structure unlike any standard catalogue product—every component was manufactured specifically for this production.

Testing Every Scenario

Before the tour entered UK rehearsals, the complete system underwent an extensive full-scale test build in Italy. Rather than simply assembling the truss, LITEC recreated the operating conditions of the live production, constructing representative support structures from LITEC’s HiPe steel truss and base systems and precisely replicating the hanging points and chain hoist positions that would be used on tour. This allowed engineers to check the behaviour of the circle and hinges under realistic operating conditions before the equipment reached the stadium stage.

During the test build, EXE Flexa Dynamic Load Cells were installed to measure rope loads and verify the engineering calculations. During the tour, EXE Flexa Dynamic Inclinometers were used for the first time worldwide to monitor the position of the circle in real- time. These monitoring systems were implemented to assess the behaviour of the entire structure under full production conditions, with all lighting and production equipment installed. The data collected provided real-time verification of the structural performance and helped validate the theoretical engineering calculations under actual operating conditions.

The LITEC team also attended pre-show rehearsals at Birmingham’s NEC and Southampton prior to the tour going live, where the fully integrated system was successfully commissioned ahead of the opening night.

Seeing the theoretical results match the real-world performance was incredibly rewarding, and it was the result of the close collaboration of everyone involved, from production and engineering to the automation team.”

The return of The Circus Live proved to be one of the major live touring successes of 2026, delighting audiences with the return of its iconic circus imagery while showcasing the possibilities of modern engineering and production technology.

For LITEC, the project demonstrates what is possible when engineering innovation supports creative ambition. The transition from hydraulic to mechanical movement, combined with the introduction of a new catenary support system, delivered a technically sophisticated solution that remained faithful to the original creative vision while advancing the capabilities of large-scale touring production.
